Joel is a Senior Ecologist with over six years’ experience in ecological consultancy, working across the residential, utilities and national infrastructure sectors. During that time, he has gained a variety of experience with different protected species and habitat survey types such as for bats, newts, water voles and preliminary ecological appraisals. Joel holds a Natural England level 1 class license to survey for great crested newts.

Joel is well experienced with biodiversity net gain assessments including facilitating large-scale strategic biodiversity improvement projects from initial stakeholder engagement through to implementation and monitoring. He has also presented on delivering biodiversity net gain for the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) as well as for colleagues and clients.

For his Masters thesis Joel investigated the effectiveness of a novel approach to agroforestry in cacao plantations in rural Ecuador for maintaining biodiversity value. He spent five weeks in the rainforest cataloguing birds, primates, herptiles and camera trapping for terrestrial mammals.

Outside of work Joel is often out enjoying the countryside or tinkering with something that has an engine. He also undertakes volunteer dormouse box checks with the Surrey Dormouse Group and enjoys playing squash.
