Mark is an experienced consultant ecologist with over 10 years’ professional consultancy experience in undertaking botanical and protected species surveys, impact assessment and mitigation planning for a wide range of development projects.

Mark graduated from the University of Southampton with a 2:1 in Environmental Science in 2008 and subsequently worked for a number of local ecological consultancies as a field surveyor and assisting with and report writing. He went back to university after two years to read MSc Biodiversity Survey at the University of Sussex, graduating with distinction, having gained a much improved understanding of the British flora, fauna and landscape.

Mark gained employment soon after graduating with a small landscape architecture consultancy that was diversifying its portfolio, and played an important role in its growth, advancing to Technical Director of Ecology after a few years. In 2017, Mark established Epoch Ecology and shortly thereafter began collaborating with Urban Edge Environmental Consulting, each assisting the other delivery of workload during the peak ecology season.

Mark is a Full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. He has been the named ecologist on several European Protected Species Mitigation licences for bats and acted as accredited agent on several others (species including Eptesicus serotinus, Myotis nattereri Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, Plecotus auritus). He was also the licensee for a badger sett closure and creation of an artificial replacement sett in 2013. Mark has contributed to or led production of EPSM applications for a range of projects affecting dormouse and great crested newt. He is also co-author on Ecological Impact Assessments and Ecology Chapters for EIA.
